Outlook Hangs After Loading

J

Jim Zoetewey

One of my clients has an installation of Microsoft Office 2007 running
on Vista.

Recently, she installed an update. I'm not sure which one, but I
suspect it must have been Office 2007 service pack 2. She said it was
"service pack 2" but didn't know whether it was for Office or Vista.

In any case, when she next opened Outlook up, it hanged. The folders
were visible off on the left, but the messages never appeared. All
that could be found in that field was the word "Loading."

After that, the program wouldn't do anything until it was closed.

I assumed that she had left Outlook open when she rebooted after the
update, thus corrupting the pst.

Thus, I ran scanpst. It detected errors, but still showed errors when
I ran scanpst on the same file again. When I tried again after
attempting to repair them, nothing changed.

Thus, I decided the best thing I could do was create a new pst file.

When I did, I discovered that if I made the new pst file the default
file, it would load. Unfortunately, if I moved the contents of the old
pst file over to the new one either by exporting, moving, or even
copying and pasting, the old problem (hanging) came back.

Also, I couldn't leave the old pst file open and have Outlook open a
second time after the first.

In the end, I decided to just create a pst, move nothing over, and let
her use the new file.

Unfortunately, it's developed the same problem.

I'm currently inclined to uninstall and reinstall Outlook, but I'm
hoping there's a better option.

Anyone have ideas?

Jim

I'd just like to say thanks.

It turned out to be solved by going into safe mode, disabling the
Business Contact Manager. After that everything worked. My guess is
that Office updated to service pack 2, but it appears that the
equivalent update for Business Contact Manager hadn't been installed.

Does it work correctly inOutlookSafe Mode?
Start-> type;outlook.exe /safe

If so, it is more likely to be an add-in issue.
