Outlook Hangs on Spell Check!

I have Outlook 2000, SP3 running on Win 2000 (no, I cannot upgrade - my
company has decided to stay with Win 2000 for the next 1.5 years!). This
problem has been present for the last 3 years (it was present on Outlook for
Win98 and I have also had it with Win NT). I am very surprised that there
are no questions posted regarding this.

If I either write a new letter, or Reply to a letter, that displays as type
HTML (look at the title bar - it shows this text on my systems: "<Title> -
Message (HTML) - US ASCII" where <Title> is the Title of the letter) the
following happens. If I choose Tools->Spelling Outlook INSTANTLY hangs. At
that same instant CPU utilization (as shown by Task Manager) goes to 100%.
Outlook (and all its children) are completely hung. There is no way out of
this except to KILL Outlook from Task Manager. If you can. Sometimes I have
no option but to power cycle the machine. Once Outlook is dead (or the
re-boot is complete) THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THE DRAFTS FOLDER!!!!
ALL MY WORK IS GONE!!!! There is also nothing in Sent or Deleted or anyplace
else. All traces of the in-progress letter are GONE (to say this is
EXTREMELY irritating is a profound understatement).

Time will not heal this wound. I have let the machine sit in that state for
MORE THAN 48 HOURS. It does NOT resolve.

NOTE: None of these letters contain a single character of HTML coding!
None. I have no idea why the status of HTML appears in the Title Bar.

As indicated above, we have SP3 installed. All available patches for
Win2000 have also been installed. So we are patched up. Does anybody have
any ideas what can be done about this? Short of simply not Spell Checking
anything that shows up as having a type of HTML? (I have learned that the
hard way, but on occasion I miss the Type indicator in the Title bar.) I
have searched and searched and searched the Microsoft Support site for
several years on this issue and have never seen anything about it. However,
I know many businesses out there that have the exact same experience.

Thanks!
