Outlook in upcoming office release?

S

Sam Lewis

Does anyone know what Microsoft intends to do with Outlook (or any
exchange client) in the upcoming release of Office for Mac? Entourage
is nice, but doesn't work terribly well with Exchange (at least
Exchange 5.5).

Does anyone know of a good replacement/third party outlook/exchange
client for the mac? I'd prefer to stick with native OS X or X11
applications rather than install an older mac operating system to run
Outlook 2001.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Outlook for Mac development has stopped.

Here's their statement:
"Exchange connectivity for Mac OS X is available in the software update to
Entourage X for Mac. For more information, see our press release Microsoft
Plans Exchange Solution for Mac OS X
<http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2003/Feb03/02-11ExchangeSolutionPR
..asp> . Outlook 2001 for Mac will continue to be the Exchange solution for
users of Mac OS 9."

You're correct that Entourage X's Exchange features don't work with Exchange
Server 5.5. It should be able to collect and send mail to/from IMAP
accounts, and perhaps search the Global Address List, but it can't do any of
the contact or calendar event synchronization or free/busy integration.

You should be able to use just about any IMAP-capable mail client to access
Exchange mail. Entourage should work for directory services, but there
aren't any other clients for Mac OS X that I know of that support the
advanced features of Exchange 5.5. The ideal solution is to upgrade to
Exchange Server 2000 or 2003, or failing that, to continue using Outlook
2001 for Mac.

Apple Mail, at least 1.3.3 in Panther, supports Exchange, but I cannot attest
to how well. I used Entourage but only got it to receive mail; I could never
get it to send. Tomorrow (Monday) I will be trying Mail for Exchange for the
first time.

I suspect that "support" for exchange is really just imap compatability; I
was really looking for native connectivity (it simplifies security issues)
and support for calendar and contact information. Now I'm tempted to try
running Outlook 2001, but would prefer not to install 9.x on the system.

The other problem is that I have to wait for my organization to upgrade from
Exchange 5.5 to something more current...

It doesn't send, but it's probably because IT doesn't have an SMTP server set
up to send mail. I can't ask them, however, because (1) using your own
computer is not allowed, and (2) using a Mac is punishable by death.
