Outlook inbox pauses while app in minimized

On windows xp pro, I have outlook XP, with a smtp
connection to the exchange server. When the application
is minimized, new messages dont arrive. When click on the
toolbar to open up (maximize) outlook all of your new
mail starts to appear. Anyone familiar with this.
