outlook incoming mail icons

I get an envelope icon on my bottom toolbar when new mail arrives while
online although I don't always use it. Right now I have two such icons
indicating that new mail is there but I opened it without the icons (just
went to inbox). The icons still remain and I can't remove them - get
"operation failed". How can I remove these icons?
