Hi there all of you which are experiencing Outlook Journaling tracking
problems!

If you are experiencing different kinds of problems with Outlook Journaling
not working, here are some things I have discovered after some
troubleshooting :)

Scenario 1:

If you are at same level of all of your Office products, i.e. using OFF2002
and all are listed in OL2002 Tools-Options-Preferences-Journaling Options,
and you have activated to track any of them but they are still not tracked
in Outlook Journaling, then try this:

Open your registry editor (start-run, type Regedit), then located following
key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Journal

Please note that 10.0 reflects OFF2002, so if you got OFF2000 then it should
be 9.0 instead :)

There you will find two keys, "Item Log File" and "Outlook Item Log File"
which contains some path to some log files. These path could be incorrect!
Change them to something simple, like "C:\offitems.log" (note the filename
in the end of the string-don't change this, although I don't think it
matters what you name them)

That's it, try your Office applications again, hopefully it will track your
updates in your office products!

Scenario 2:

If you are missing Journaling entries in Outlook for your office
applications, then this is useful:

298737 OL2002: How to Set Outlook Journal Registry Entries
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=298737

839945 Office XP programs do not appear in the Journal Options dialog box in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=839945

Scenario 3:

If you are using different kinds of office versions, like OL2002, ACC97,
Project 2000, Visio 2003, then you are up for some more work... maybe :)

Here are my findings for now:

Related products tested:

OL2002 and Project 2000 which doesn't track.

This article started me to think ;-)

238504 OL2000: Automatic Journal Recording Does Not Work with Office 97
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=238504

It states:

"If you use Office 97 programs with Outlook 2000, the Journal does not
record the use of Office 97 programs because Office 97 and Office 2000 write
their log files to different places."

Ok... where is this set? So I tried something; How about copying the
registry key with its content from;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Journal

....to the old key, like;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Journal

Eureka! Project 2000 was tracking in OL2002!

I did some brief testing with 9.0 Key which would normally reflect OFF2000
(and project 2000?) registry key, but it didn't track! So basically it works
with the 8.0 key which is Office 97 (and even OL98?)

Final notes:
Now, I really don't know about the mixing of other versions of Office, but I
think in overall that each product in the office family will track changes
to the log file, if the registry entry exist in these office registry keys
8.0/9.0/10.0/11.0. Then Outlook will pick them up from the log file at
regular intervals or by clicking the 'Journal' Folder in Outlook. Please
note that the log file and path must be the same for all office versions, or
else it won't work!

Anyhow, I hope this helps for you as well and I hope I didn't spam you too
much ;-)

Robert

There's no such word as "journaling", is there?
I can't find it in Outlook Help anyway.

Don't get fooled by incorrect usage of curtain words but instead tweak your
mind and search for "Journal" "instead :)

English is not my primary language, so be patience with me, ok? :)

But what if I wanted to turn journaling off?

How do I do so?

In Microsoft Outlook, choose Tools-Options-Preferences-Journal Options and
unchech what ever application you like.
