Outlook Locks Up

I'm trying to use Outlook (Office XP - Version 10.4712.4219 SP-2) to read mail from a couple of POP accounts from Earthlink. Outlook repeatedly locks up and freezes during message downloads. The only way out it to kill it and restart it, but then it locks up again right away.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what might be causing this?

First click on start-run and type in: outlook /safe this will put outlook in safe mode.

To determine what is happening I would use msconfig to see if there is a program causing this problem. I would also create a new profile in outlook
