Outlook mail notifacation should turn off on opening latest messag

The outlook mail notifacation does not turn off when the latest message is
selected. To get it to clear requires that you select one of the new messages
and then select another message. Selecting any new message should clear the
mail notifacation icon.

You should take a look into Tools, Options, Other, Reading Pane (in
2007) or Preview Pane (in 2003). There you can control when Outlook
marks a message as read when looking at it in the pane.
