outlook network password

New laptop with Outlook 2003. When setting up my POP3, I have entered all
information correctly with password, and check save password. When I test
settings, I keep getting the box, "Network Password Not saved" over and over
(have tried changing passwords, checked my POP3 settings and my webmail
settings) as well as Outlook Help" and called computer manufacturer tech
support who ultimately advised that I use the "fix" noted below.

It appears this is a glitch that occurs sometimes, and the resolution is "to
remove my user account info from the Protected Storage System Provider in the
Windows registry" --with the caveat that "If you use the registry
incorrectly, you might cause serious problems that might require you to
reinstall your operating system...blah, blah. Use registry editor at your own
risk."

All I want to do is be able to use outlook on new laptop, but currently I
cannot even get an e-mail account set up. Any ideas less traumatic than
messing with the registry? Are there any corrective patches if this is a
known problem?
