Outlook newsreader installation

I dropped the 'news' icon while moving it to the 'Go' menu to set up the
newsreader; now I can't find it in the Commands list under Add Remove
Buttons\Customize\Commands tab\Categories\Go, and can't set up the
newsreader. how can I fix this?

Use the Reset button in Customize Toolbars and see if the corrects it.

It should be there unless you used it once and were prompted to make it
default.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

repairing the MS Office Suite, also without success!

I think that reinstallation might be the answer, but hope I don't loose all
the messages in the inbox/outbox as a result - will archiving before hand

To get the News item back, open IE and click Tools>Internet Options>Programs
and use the Newsgroups drop-down to select Outlook Express. If OE asks you
if you want to make it the default newsreader, select the "do not ask again"
box and click No.

It's just going to disappear again when you try to set it up, waste of time.
I eventually accepted making Outlook Express my default newsreader, it's a
much better/simpler interface anyhow and 100% reliable.

Same goes for here at work where the Email package is Novell Groupwise.
Keeping the mail and news functions separate makes for trouble-free
communication.

the newsreader installed, just as the directions say. It seems to use a
separate newreader opening in a separate window (likely the newsreader from
Outlook Express - for Doug)

Important Reminder: before reinstalling, EXPORT YOUR ADDRESS BOOK and
ARCHIVE YOUR MESSAGES (if they were not left on the server) and forgood
measure, make a separate copy of the archive before reinstalling, otherwise
the reinstallation wil write over the old info, and you'll loose all the
messages. (You'll be able to recover the address book as there is
autocomplete for the email address of the 'add new contact' dialogue (if you
type a single letter in the email address box, all the previous enties
starting with that letter will be displayed as in a dropdown list -very
tedious but possible)

Yup, I believe it IS the newsreader from Outlook Express. I created the
account in Outlook just before the "news" button went AWOL and when I
accepted OE as the default, it returned, unchanged and identical to what I
had set up.

No one else has ever reported that.

I eventually accepted making Outlook Express my default
newsreader, it's a much better/simpler interface anyhow and 100%
reliable.

Since Outlook uses Outlook Express for its newreader, this is what you would
have done if you had followed the steps I outlined.

Never export. Just make a copy of the PST and you're all set.

(You'll be able to recover

The name cache you describe is the file {profilename}.NK2 located in
the (hidden) folder %AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook

It disappears because you answer Yes to a dialog - To get the News command
