Outlook niggles

I'm still getting to grips with this Outlook 2007 program and have a further
two niggles:

1. Sometimes when people send me an email which is quite lengthy (plain
text) outlook displays it in such a way that the font size is far too small
I have to copy and paste it into Word! it's like it's trying to fit 2 pages
on to one page.

2. When I click on To: to select a contact to send an email to, it can take
a minute or more (sometimes) for the pop-up contact list to 'free itself' to
allow me to select the recipient(s)

Such a shame MS decided to discontinue WinMail in Windows 7 :-(

Win 7 uses Windows Live Mail, the successor to WM, if you care to install
it.
1) do you actually open the msg?
2) Cannot say I've experienced this, is the problem replicated if you open
Outlook using the safe switch?

1. Check the Zoom settings on the message to ensure that it is set to 100%
(lower right hand corner)
2. Do you have more than one contacts folder designated as an Outlook
Address Book?

I'll check that next time it happens.

Not as far as I am aware...how would I check this? (yes, I'm very new to
Outlook).

Aha, I usually just use the preview pane - that could well be the
problem...damn annoying that I have to open the message though when OE and
WinMail manage to re-size/scale text.

I don't know what the 'safe switch' is or the implications of its use?

Just to add:

1. I don't appear to have a zoom setting in the lower right
2. Yes, even if I open the message the type is small

Sorry if I sound like an advertisement from Microsoft.

Windows 7 does have a mail program replacement, but it is not included as a
default program in Windows. I found that Windows Live Mail works
wonderfully. It is free to download and install, and unlike Outlook, WLM
has newsgroup support just like Outlook express. WLM also allows you to add
all of your email addresses from different carriers like Gmail, Hotmail etc.
WLM is very much like Outlook Express, but has much more functionality. You
can get it here:

http://download.live.com/wlmail

Windows Live has more useful programs including Messenger, Mail, Writer,
Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Family Safety and Toolbar. In addition there
are Microsoft Office Outlook Connector, Office Live Add-in and Silverlight.
I took this list right off the Microsoft Live web site at
http://download.live.com/

You can download any or all of these programs from the above page. And,
they are all free. I have only downloaded Windows Live Mail. However, I
have seen and used some of the others. They all work as intended.

Someone said that most email readers don't do newsgroups all that well and
programs used primarily designed for newsgroup reading don't do email. In
the case of WLM, I do not agree.
