Outlook not responding when opening attachments

When I try to open an attachment, or use a hyperlink, in a mail in Outlook
2003 the application freezes. I have defragged, used Registry Mechanic, used
Detect and Repair, all to avail. I can save attachments and then use
appropriate app to open them but it is getting tedious. Any other ideas,
tips/
