Outlook online indicator says offline

Outlook has worked great until after taking a MS Outlook 2003 online tutorial
#18/29 "Find, copy, or backup email on your computer." I followed
installing the examples Outlook personal folders file, .pst file, and then
deleted the test folders and files, and now the online indicator doesn't
work. It indicates offline when it is actually online.
