Outlook "out of memory" error

I have posted this problem on WinXP help forum, but have not gotten any info.
Have a Dell 2400 Desktop with Physical Memory of 256M and 30.02M available,
with XP loaded. Had Office 2000, used Outlook with no problems. Tried to
scan to email using HP6110. Problem caused scan to stop, pc to freeze.
Rebooted, Outlook began showing errors relating to Installer and saying there
was not enough memory, virtual memory insufficient (sytem show 2.0GB actual,
1.96GB available). Did all the usual diagnostics, defragged, cleaned the
disk, deleted temp files, etc. Uninstalled Office 2000, Norton System Works,
Spamfighter, rebooted, used Dell Resource CD to diagnose problems, none
found. Installed Office 2003 and McAfee, pc still indicates "not enough
memory to run application" when attempting to open Outlook. PC runs slower.
Have now uninstalled Office 2003 and am at a loss as to what to do to fix
this problem. Should I reinstall XP and if I do, what is lost? Is it
possible that the pagefile (system shows 620.62M) is corrupted? Any
suggestions?
