Outlook Outbox Woes

Scenario:

Office Network: Small Business Server 2000; file & print,
ISA, Exchange, DHCP (VPN pending)

Workstations: 3x Windows XP Desktops, 1x laptop; Office
XP Pro, accounting, stock control

Laptop is in office ±40% of the time. Works off site for
the remainder. Depending on location and circumstance,
connection to internet could be by ADSL router(ethernet),
copper dialup or cellular modem. Offline files and
folders are enabled to allow the user to continue work
offsite.

When in the office Outlook XP functions as is should,
sends and receives, no problem. However, yesterday, when
offsite, she called to say she couldn't email from home.
When I visited her at home I found this to be true, in
the first instance she wasn't connecting to the net
period.

I established that their ADSL router was using a
different subnet from that at the office, I disabled
the "user specified" IP, enabled the DHCP server in their
router, we had a connection. I then proceeded to setup up
and test both her internal copper modem and then her CDMA
based cellular modem. I could now browse the net using
any of these media.

I then fired up Outlook XP. I set her system up to copper-
dial her ISP and retrieve her messages from the Exchange
server IP via the ISP connection and then to send mail
via the SMTP host at her ISP. This was done by creating a
new email account specifying the incoming and outgoing
server addresses and the connection method.

I did the same yesterday for the cellular modem and her
home based ADSL too. Initially mail come in and went out
with seemingly no difficulty. I sent and replied to
several using all the offsite media. The problem though
is, by default when pressing "F9", Outlook tries to
converse using all the connection types, prompting for
dialup up details, with each generating an error message
when cancelled th edialup request.

I figured there must be a way around this. I then
attempted to setup individual Send/Receive Groups. I was
quite excited when this seemed to provide the function
that I was looking for and the user was happy with.
However after demonstrating the function to the user and
allowing her to do likewise, she thought her husband
should also trial it as he could offer assistance should
she strike difficulties later, the "new" mail and
the "reply" mail he attempted are still sitting in the
Outbox, not budging.

No matter how much cajoling, I can't get it to send
anymore. I have removed the previously created groups,
deleted and re-created the email accounts individually,
retraced my steps to the beginning and back again.

One event I noted, that probably provides the hinge for
all of this. Is that now when starting Outlook a message
box stating that a connection to the Exchange server
failed, click "retry" or "work offline".

To confirm email functionality is possible, Outlook
Express works with the same credentials without issue.

Any help or suggestion would be welcome.
