Outlook permanently deletes email

Greetings -

I have a problem with Outlook 2007 - some messages are automatically
being permanently deleted. I can recover the deleted files, but it's a
bit of a pain to chase 3 or 4 messages a day. I have no filters which
send a message to the deleted folder, let alone permanently delete
them. All messages are displayed in the Inbox, both read and
unread - but some of the unread messages are permanently deleted
within a few seconds of arriving. When I recover a deleted message, it
will be deleted again within 30 seconds from the Inbox - while I
watch.

It keeps getting weirder, though. If I quickly drag the messgae to
another folder, it won't be deleted, giving me a chance to look at it
and change the message's status to 'read'. If I then drag the same
message back to the Inbox, it won't be deleted. If I drag it back to
the Inbox while it is still designated as 'unread', however, it will
be deleted again.

The 'read' message can sit in the Inbox indefinitely; however, if I
change its status using 'mark as unread' on the local menu, Outlook
will permanently delete it again.

I'm using Kaspersky, but email AV is disabled, as the email is checked
first by a Barracuda Spam Firewall at my ISP's server.

My OS is Windows XP SP2.

Clues?

Thanks - Dennis

Do you have any rules set up?

Thanks for the response.

I have some rules set up - but only to move new messages to dedicated
folders. There are no rules set up to delete anything. Every message
that comes in should wind up in the Inbox, in one of the dedicated
folders, or in the Junk E-mail folder. My 'mystery' messages show up
briefly in the Inbox, then disappear. I can retrieve them using Tools,
Recover Deleted Items - but would prefer not to chase them.

BTW - email is set up as POP3.

Thoughts?

Do you have any spam filters or AV software that might be doing this?

No spam filters are set up on my computer - other than those that
Outlook 2007 has for Junk E-mail. In truth, many of the incoming
emails go to the Junk E-mail folder, but I always review them before
deleting them from that folder. There are also some messages that are
never delivered, as the Barracuda spam firewall at my ISP intercepts
them. Other than those two exceptions, though, nothing should be
deleted. I tried turning off all the rules as well (the ones that
divert incoming mail into dedicated folders), but the mysterious
deletions are still going on - and I have to resort to Tools, Recover
Deleted Items.

Curiouser and curiouser.

I'd suspect something operating on the Exchange server then.
