Outlook POP password problem

P

Peter Tucker

I have a conundrum with Outlook POP email account & the (0x800CCC92) password
error.

Due to user cock-up I have had to retrieve a backup of the Outlook.pst file
and put back into correct file location.

I have re-setup the email settings server/username/password etc pressed the
"Test Account Settings" and get a green tick against all of them, and checked
"Remember password". Next and Finish.

BUT then when Outlook goes to collect mail i get the "Enter Network
Password" box come up and reenter the password and checked "Save password"
and OK

The "Outlook S/R Progress" dialog box says:

Task '192.168.0.254 - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail
server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your
account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server
responded: -ERR Username or password is invalid or incorrect.'

Now I know this is message is not correct for two reasons, one, i previously
got an affirmative confirmation on the "Test Account Settings" and it came
back OK and I used Telnet to login to the mailserver with the U/P and got an
+OK response.

I have deleted the email account and re-setup many times. Restarted the
machine many times even closed down and unplugged the mains lead.

I'm now at a loss to know where to go now, help please.

Peter

Version of Outlook?
If you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook, disable this
integration and try again.
Task '192.168.0.254 - Receiving'
This doesn't look right. Why is it a local address?

Outlook 2003

No Virus Scanner associated with it

And 192.168.0.254 is the local mail server.

It was all working yesterday until my customer started looking for something
and in the process somehow messed-up permissions etc.

So except for reinstating a backup of the data. Ii can send no problem.

Well, i've just got back to this machine.

Yes i've added a new profile and in the email setup and succeeded in "Test
Account Settings"

BUT the new profile will not provide the password to the POP server either.
All the other computers running Outlook here are fine.

And I've done one final test, I've created a new mail account on another
mail server out on the Internet rather than local and get exactly the same
error condition (0x800CCC92).

It's as if Outlook is scrambling the password when it sends it to the POP
server. i have changed the password a couple of times obviously at both ends
....

I have done one final text for now, i've setup Outlook Express and that is
able to collect from the same POP servers, both local and Internet.

Is there something I can change in the Registry? or would a reinstall of
Outlook make any difference?

Does it work in Outlook Safe Mode?
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe

Does it work when you logon as a different user?

OK tried starting in Safe mode and get exactly the same error conditions and
messages.

Right ... part 2 : Setup another User account on PC and setup Outlook – it
still does not connect.

However this time the "Enter Network Password" box comes up with the
password filled in – clicking OK just comes back with the same message, I
have to click cancel. Then I get the following error:

"Receiving reported error (0x800CCC92) : "Your e-mail server rejected your
login...

Reinstall now? ~ Edit Registry somehow???

Hi I have the same issue which is driving me nuts, I receive the testing
email in my att account, when I connect via internet and their sites, I have
tried everything described, the logon keeps on poping when I try to connect
with Outlook and reject me with the same error message Task
'ipostoffice.worlnet.att.net- Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your
e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your
account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server
responded: -ERR Username or password is invalid or incorrect.' It used to
work fine on outlook express untill I decided to switch to Outlook 2003.

I Have attached copy of my latest email received from Outlook testing ( I
have removed my name from my email address).

This is an e-mail message sent automatically by Microsoft Office Outlook's
Account Manager while testing the settings for your POP3 account.

I have done the testing as suggested and am waiting for a response on what
to do next.
