outlook problem - 'arrange by'

When I arrange my sent items by 'to' I find that it some emails, for example,
have been sent to John Smith and others to 'John Smith.' Both of these point
to the same contact in my address book but the 'arrange by' feature treats
them as different contacts.
Han anyone got any ideas? I'm using Outlook 2007.

I suspect some are messages you initiated and others are replies to messages
from the sender. The former will show the Display As field of your contact.
The latter will show what the original sender had in the From field.
