Outlook Problem - Very Annoying!

When I open Outlook
version - Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 SP2

It immediately shows Personal Folders - Outlook Today and then I get this
message -

Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page.

Line: 298
Char: 1
Error: %1 is not a valid Win32 application.
Code: 0
URL: outlook:today

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes or No

Have you tried to run Repair Office? The Outlook Today is a Web Page that
contains scripting. If you have Security set too high or you have AV
software integrated with Outlook or the page itself is corrupted you ca get
this. One way to avoid this is to set your Inbox to be the folder that
appears when Outlook is started until you can work it out whete the trouble
is.

No I haven't, but I will. I have recently installed Mcafee VirusScan and
then unintstalled it and then installed Norton AntiVirus 2006, Spyware
Blaster, and Registry Mechanic 5.2. I assume one of these programs is what
caused the problem because they are the only changes made to the hard drive
and I'm the only user. So I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the
recommendation!

So I tried to run a repair on outlook and I get an error message.

This installation package could not be opened.
Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
Installer package.

It should be valid because I bought this Office 2003 standard edition and
paid 399.00 for it from the microsoft website using that third party company
they have the orders setup through.

Do you have any clues on this one?

I had this same type of problem with Internet Explorer. It was
sporadic, but frequent. I tried removing and reinstalling IE along with
a multitude of other things. Unfortunately, my only solution was to buy
a new pc! I could have done an original recovery but I figured what was
the point if that was the only option left. A new pc was much more
attractive anyway.

Well he doesn't need a new PC to fix this. What he needs to do is avoid
Software which integrates into Outlook and such things as Registry Mechanic.
You also might want to check your Help files and follow a few links in that
see if all is well with your Help system. There is a Cumulative Update to
IE that can cause your issue. I do not know why Microsoft has done this but
they have and they have been releasing fixes for the stupid issue everr
since they decided to screw around with the Help System. Check out in the
Knowledge Base fixes on ShowHelp with IE 6. The fixes you find there may
help. But please do not use Registry Mechanic or Norton Products in the
future.

You definately didn't have to buy a new pc. That's really overboard. You
could have formatted your Hard Drive and reinstalled your operating system
and then you would have a brand new fresh system with no problems. I called
Microsoft and got the fix for this problem. If you want it, just reply and
I'll give you the information that they gave me. It worked perfectly.

It had nothing to do with Registry Mechanic at all. First off, I downloaded
and installed Registry Mechanic and ran it, but I never bought it. If you
don't buy it you can't fix anything because Registry Mechanic doesn't come
with a trial at all, which in my eyes is very stupid. So Registry Mechanic
will show you that you have problems but won't fix them until you purchase
the program. So I uninstalled it immediately.

I called Microsoft and got the fix for this problem which had to do with
Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office 2003 Standard Edition. The
installation information was corrupted. Also I had several copies of
officeav.dll on my computer.

So the fix went as so,
Search your computer for all copies of officeav.dll
Rename all the officeav.old officeav.old1 and so on.
If you have antivirus software on your computer like Norton AntiVirus 2006
you most likely will not be able to rename one of the files. That is okay,
leave that one alone.
Next download msicuu2.exe which can be found on Microsoft's website by
searching for "Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" without
the quotes.
Download and choose OPEN and first make sure all your Office products are
closed.
Then using that program scroll down and find Microsoft Office 2003 Standard
Edition and choose the option to delete it.
Then close that program
Then you want to reinstall your office software.

When I did this I went ahead and backed up my personal folders in Outlook,
but I didn't need to because everything was the same after I resintalled.
Working perfectly now with no problems.

You can reply if you need help.

To George Hester - Comments about Norton - What do you have against Norton
Products?

This problem came about after uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2005 and
installing Mcafee Virusscan and then uninstalling that and then installing
Norton AntiVirus 2006 because I didn't like Mcafee's version.

These are 2 of the top Virus protection companies on earth right now! What
do you use?

Me I don't use anything never found the need to. But yes the Windows
Uninstaller Utility. Very good there. What that does is remove any
information put in your system by the Windows Installer Technology that was
not removed by the Uninstall. Yes very good I didn't think about that and
probably wouldn't have. Hey that's why they are Microsoft and paid the big
bucks. The issue is how did this happen in the first place? I suspect AV
integrating with Outlook. The issue with Registry Mechanic means nothing.
If I wanted you to buy my product you could be sure my trial would find a
problem on your machine too that needed fixing with your money.

Why do I have a problem with Norton?. Beccuse they do not know how to make
an uninstaller for their products. Never have known how.

I am very pleased that you were able to fix the issue. Watch those
Cumulative Updates for IE. What iI told you about them is still a concern.

D

Darin Cawthon

You don't use anything and never found the need to? Wow! Do you use your
computer? I supposed you don't use a firewall or anything to help keep your
computer or network safe either?

Personally I have to run to Norton AV, Ad-Aware, and Spybot. I also use
HijackThis to solve other little problems. Really, I don't understand how
you can use your computer online and download and install different programs
that you need for certain tasks and never need some sort of protection.
That's like being a police officer but never wearing a vest.

_______

Windows Uninstaller Utility - What that does is remove any information put
in your system by the Windows Installer Technology that was not removed by
the Uninstall.

True, but in this scenario I was not able to uninstall the program at all
because the install information was corrupted. So it had to be removed using
the Windows Uninstaller Utility, then the program had to be resintalled or it
would not ever be able to uninstall if I wanted to do that.

_______

"I suspect AV integrating with Outlook.'

I'd say your right. Either Mcafee Virusscan or Norton Anitvirus, or
installing and uninstalling the trials for both somewhere caused this problem.

________

"The issue with Registry Mechanic means nothing. If I wanted you to buy my
product you could be sure my trial would find a problem on your machine too
that needed fixing with your money."

Means nothing? Huh? What do you mean?

If you wanted me to buy your product you could be sure your trial would find
a problem on my machine?

Well that also ties in to the next thing you said below -

"Why do I have a problem with Norton?. Beccuse they do not know how to make
an uninstaller for their products. Never have known how."

Okay, this is kind of funny.

There are tons of problems in windows caused by the things you install and
uninstall. That's why I asked you if you ever used your computer.

Who know's how to make an uninstaller for their product?
I don't know. Main thing here is WHO DOES?

So if you have a good program, I'm pretty sure you'll find some kind of
problem some where in the registry. There is always left-over garbage in the
registry. So I get what your saying there, but that's probably why they are
selling so many of those programs too.

Have you ever looked in the Windows Registry? It shows almost every darn
program you have ever installed, because most of the programs out there don't
know how to remove the tracks they leave behind. That's probably why that
other guy wanted to buy a new computer. LOL. Less headache and probably
just wanted a faster computer. Kind of funny though. Hope he backs up his
information and formats his drive before he gets rid of the old computer.

_______

"I am very pleased that you were able to fix the issue. Watch those
Cumulative Updates for IE. What iI told you about them is still a concern."

Thanks! I am too! Those updates for some reason likes to change a registry
value that allows me to save pictures as a .jpg in Paint. Haven't had any
other problem that I can remember or notice.

Hopefully someone will read all this and benefit some how. These groups are
awesome! Thanks for all the replies!
