Outlook pst file

O

Otto Moehrbach

Someone installed Windows Millennium over Windows 98 on a friend's computer.
Before doing this, this person took all the information (address book, all
folders, etc) from the then existing Outlook Express and put it in Outlook.
This created a file named "outlook.pst". He saved this file and pasted it
into the Windows folder after installing Windows Millennium. This file is
about 70 megs big.
I have this file and I have Windows XP in my computer. How can I extract
this friend's Outlook Express data from this file? Thanks for your help.

"Extract?" Not clear what you want to do.
To access the data, open the file in Outlook.
File > Open > Outlook Data File...

If I can't extract the data, how can I just view it? Thanks for your help.

I opened the file as you said while the file resided in my "Dummy"
folder (otherwise blank utility folder) and I saw nothing. Then I copied
the file into the Outlook folder and opened it from there, but I again don't
see anything in Outlook (for instance, the address book). I know very
little about Outlook so I could have easily missed something or maybe I'm
not looking in the right place within Outlook. Could you walk this novice
through the steps from opening the file to viewing the data?
BTW, there was no "outlook.pst" file in the Outlook folder before I
copied my 70 meg file into that folder. Thanks for your time. Otto

First, never copy an Outlook data file into the default folder. It won't
change your ability to access it, but could well corrupt an Outlook profile
by overwriting another PST file. Always leave it somewhere else.
If this PST file contains no data, then it was not created correctly or was
transferred incorrectly. You'll need to provide information on how that was
done for any further troubleshooting. Normally one would never try to
transfer OE data via Outlook's PST format.

I removed that file from the default folder and again opened the file
from my Dummy folder and looked around for some data. Apparently I wasn't
looking in the right place before. This time I found all the Personal
folders as well as a "Contacts" folder that contained a listing of the old
OE address book. I had already re-typed the whole address book info to the
OE address book so I don't need to move/copy the address book info. Now I
need to somehow move the Personal folders into the OE Local folder.
Short of copy/paste every message text into a text file, is there some
way to move/copy/save these folders from Outlook to OE? Thanks for your
time. Otto

You're asking an OE question. I've never used OE. As I recall, OE can import
messages from Outlook, but not Contacts. Nor can Outlook export to OE.
(That's why trying to transfer this data via Outlook made no sense).
You'll need to export your Contacts to a format OE can import, such as CSV.
There is no address book in Outlook. Outlook uses Contacts Folders.
