Outlook.pst modified automatically

I'm having a problem with my outlook.pst file. Even when outlook is closed,
the file periodically appears to modify itself -- at least the "date
modified" changes. This presents a problem for my otherwise excellent
synchronization service (foldershare).

Anyone have any ideas how to keep it so that outlook.pst -- like every other
file on my computer -- does not change in any way when outlook is not open?

There are a number of applications that integrate with Outlook and thus will
use Outlook's API to modify the PST. Activesync is one such. An antivirus
scanner could do it, too.
