Greetings & Salutations,
Not to worry, after encountering the "Cannot start Outlook Reminder
Service" message several times on a users computer even after complete
system wipes, then other computers in the organization, I have managed
to find a reference to a solution that solved the problem. (Sorry
for the long winded bit at the end there)
OUTLOOK.EXE /ResetFolders
Whahooo. Sorry but I cannot remember the link, otherwise I would post
it here.
*Story*
When I first noticed this on one of my users computer, my first
instinct was to search the MS KB, then the newsgroups. The first
options I tried were not successful, but included the /cleanreminders
switch.
I then tried a detect & repair. When that failed I moved onto a
re-install from the CD setup. No luck with that, so I moved on to
removing & re-installing.
Fed up with software installations, I then tried removing the profile
& recreating. This was when I had my first pseudo-win. When the test
reminders worked, I then tried updating the program & when all the
updates were done, I then imported all the old data. *ARGGGH* Problem
reoccurred during the import.
Thinking it might have been the data I tried to recreate the profile
again but no luck, even the test reminders would not work. Fortunately
a reinstall was not needed. Shutting down the computer, then
recreating the profile and the reminders were working again. This time
I just did an update, thinking 'Stuff the bloody user, I'll just tell
him the old emails were corrupt'. *ARGGGH* Problem reoccurred just 60
seconds after loading the program after all the updates were done.
Now I decided to check other computers, thinking it was the updates
causing the problem. *ARGGGH* All the computers I tried had the same
problem, none of them had SP1 installed (My bad). [To check them out I
started Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch as you will know in
~2minutes if it worked or not]
From another users computer, that I had just tried checking Outlook
on, I did another search for this problem. Unlike my own personal
preferences, this user was using the MSN search engine as the default
search (I like Yahoo). *WHAHOO* Completely different search results
came up, the 2nd one being the one that I wanted.
This new solution page had several recommendations for fixing reminder
problems in Outlook. Of course after trying them all, only the last
one would work. /RESETFOLDERS
Now all the computers still have this Outlook problem, but every time
I want to fix it the folder reset switch works like a charm. The
reminder problem will ALWAYS reoccur when you use the /CleanReminders
switch, and does occasionally crop up (only had a ~week to gather
results, and only one unidentified case was reported), but it's so
easy to fix now I don't worry about it.
*Moral*
Never be satisfied with the search results from just one source.
I know I won't be restricting myself to one search site, even if I do get links I'm looking for.
PS: I didn't actually need to run this switch for the user account
where the problem was first found. It appears that running this switch
in the local Administrator account will fix it for any domain user
that logs in on that computer. Weird huh? (Referring to Outlook
storing it's 'folders' in the user profile, not the local machine
profile)
