Outlook 'Retrieving all messeges' and I don't want it to.

I think I may just have to murder someone because this is driving me
totaly nuts.

We have a salesman who dials in to retrieve their email. The send and
recieve process goes fine until the download box comes up with
'Retrieving all items'. It then proceeds to try and download 1500+
emails down a 56k connection every time it does a send and recieve.

If anyone can help me I'll buy them a beer. Or 3.

What type of connection (mail connection) does the salesman use? Is it POP3?
IMAP? Exchange?
