Outlook Rule To Filter Spam From Yourself

Q

quirkyjoe

I am getting spam from organizations where they are putting my email
address in the sender's field.

I do not want to delete these with an Outlook Rule because I regulary
bcc: myself on my email so that I can easily save my emails that I
send out to various groups.

How do I set up an Outlook Rule in Outlook 2002 to delete the spam
from these spoofers who use my own address?

Thanks

Err your sent emails get saved automatically in the Sent Items folder.
Why would you bcc yourself?

In addition to what Gordon said;
Rules are a very inefficient way to fight spam. While you can create certain
rules to filter out the most obvious junk, it is still recommended to use a
Junk Email filter these days.
There are various 3rd party addins available for this (free and commercial)
and a Junk Email Filter is included in Outlook since Outlook 2003.
As an alternative you could see if your ISP is offering a Junk Email Filter
at server level which you can enable via your account's web based interface
if you do not want to install anything extra on your machine.

quirkyjoe,
First go to your list of Rules in OUTLOOK, and make sure that the action of "Do
Not Process More Rules", is added to each rule that you have already created.
Also create a New Folder, named "REVIEW".

In Outlook create a Message Rule.
1. When message arrives with (e-mail address removed) in the FROM: line.
2. Move message to folder named "REVIEW", or what ever name you created for the
new folder.
3. Stop Processing More Rules.
4. Just turn on the Rule, name it REVIEW rule, do not apply it to any folders
yet> Finish.
5. Go back to the Rules List> Move the rule to the bottom of the list, just
above any SPAM rules that you already created. If you have rules that delete
Messages based on words in the subject line such as VIAGRA, etc... You may want
to move the rule that you have created below them.
6. You will have to check the REVIEW folder, and delete the SPAM messages, that
get through.
7. You can also enable archiving for that folder, and Select to Delete the
messages in the folder, if they are over XX days old. Depending how often you
check your mail, 7 Days or 14 days may be a good setting for you.

Gordon,
Since the only option is to place a copy of the Sent Message in the Sent Items
or do not save a message to that folder. You cannot select which individual
message, you want to keep. I do the same thing, there are some messages that I
do send that I don't need a copy of.

Such as:
1. News Article or Internet photo, I think a friend may be interested in. Using
the "Send to Mail Receipient" function.
2. A short note to someone.
3. A message I forwarded, that I do not a duplicate of.

I prefer not having to go through the Sent Items folder, later, to clean out
messages I do not really need to keep.

Not true. If using Word as you rmail editor, click Options>Options and check
the box marked "Save sent messages to". if using the Outlook editor, click
View>Options.
