Outlook running in background

L

I have Outlook 2000 running on my Win98se machine. It starts when I log in
because it is in my start up folder. When I close down outlook and continue
using my computer Outlook still pops up from nowhere and alerts me when I
have new mail.
I cannot find the setting to make this happen on my other computer with the
same software. I have outlook in the startup folder so it starts when I
switch the computer on but when I shut down outlook it will not run in the
background and alert me to new mail. I have ticked all the boxes telling it
to check for mail every 5 mins, show dialogue box, change curser and play a
sound but it refuses to do this after I have sut it down. ( same settings as
my computer)

The only difference I can find is that on the machine that does Alert me to
new mail after Outlook is shut down has Outlook and winword running in the
processes box when I press CTR ALT DEL. I dont know if this is the reason And
if it is I cannot duplicate it on the other machine.

There are many things that can keep Outlook running after you've closed the
main program, whether you like this behavior or not. See
http://www.slipstick.com/problems/close.htm for a comprehensive list of
culprits and some additional information.
