Outlook running on a different domain

We are running outlook 2003 on a different domain than the exchange server. I
can validate the user when setting up the exchange server account but when
complete, outlook only opens in an offline mode and never connects to that
persons mailbox. We are running Exchange 5.5 on an NT os.
