Outlook searches out of order

Outlook 2003 it starts a search of messages from 9-16-08 and goes
older,(takes about 5 minutes to get to 2005, lots of email) then it searches
new email from preset to 9-16. Very weird. 9-17 was the day the new exchange
server was installed. How do I fix the search order?
