I prepared a message with too large of an attachement and now it is hung up
in my outbox - can't delete it as it says it is already in transmission. this
has been several weeks now and I would like to delete it. thanks

Go offline and then try to delete it in Outlook

To expand on what Peter said:
In outlook click File and check Work Offline. Close and then restart
Outlook. Delete
the message. Click File and uncheck Work Offline.
