Outlook sends email to isp but no longer receives email.

Outlook 2000 SP3 has been working just fine on a WinXP SP2 system. Now it
sends ok, but times out when trying to receive. All the settings are the
same as they have been. Outlook 2000 email works fine with an older Win98
system using the same settings, so its not the server.

The symptoms are strange. If there are no messages in the mailbox, the
delivering window flashes on and off like it should. However, if there are
messages delivering comes on and Trend PCcillin Internet Security comes on
and says it is scanning incoming mail, but an Outlook error message comes up
saying that some messages can't be retrieved, because connection to the
server was lost, and none actually are
received. The result is the same if PCcillin antivirus and/or firewall are
turned off. The other computer continues to work correctly, so it must be
this copy of Outlook gone bad. Makine the timeout longer only lets it take
onger to get the same error message.

Any specific ideas?
Thanks Joel

Ok, this may sound a little strange, but are you running the McAfee Privacy
service? I get a problem that's very similar to this when the privacy
service is turned on. I need to disable that before I download e-mails, as
sometimes is locks up. Just a passing thought.

Try turning off your Virus scanner, Firewall and any other program that
could potentially check e-mails. Make sure that you get them all, then try
the send/receive again. I would guess that it's not Outlook that screwed
up, but more likely it's getting interfered with.

Also you say that Outlook reports an error message, What's the message? I'm
sure that someone here can put some light on the problem.

The problem is exactly the same whether PCcillin Internet Security is turned
on or if the Antivirus, Internet Personal Firewall and AntiSpam are all
turned off. The message that Outlook 2000 gives is" "Some messages couldn't
be retrieved. This usually happens when the connection to the server is
lost." No messages are actually received. This message has come up in the
past when the server is truly down. But this time the server is fine since
I can get the email via my notebook computer running Outlook 2000, and the
ISP says everything is ok. I can send ok, just not receive. How can I
"reinstal or repairl" just Outlook 2000?
