My desktop gets cluttered with answered mail.
I would like an optional setting in Outlook that automatically closes the
original message window when a reply is created.

It has existed in all versions of Outlook - you need to set it under the
Tools->Options->EMail Options.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
