Outlook should let me choose "cancel" when exiting.

When exiting out of an email, I cannot be the only person in the world who
will sometimes accidently exit completely out of Outlook. When this occurs,
there is no cancel option to keep you in Outlook. Am I missing something?
This should be pretty basic.

For a long time, I've wished Outlook had the option to run as a Tray program
where you could close the main window and still have it running in the tray
(next the clock). Outlook 2003 (with its tray icon and Minimize to Tray
option) came close... but it is awkward and unintuitive (most tray programs
don't work that way... for instance when I close the Volume/Mixer window the
program isn't unloaded and the volume icon disappear).

Firstly, please do NOT hijack one thread with a question about something
entirely different.

I don't understand that - what do you mean "awkward and unintuitive"? And
what way does Outlook minimized "not work"? What do you mean by "when I
close the Volume/Mixer window the program isn't unloaded and the volume icon
disappear" and how does that apply to Outlook minimized in the tray?

I wasn't asking a question. I was making a comment that I thought was
corollary to the original posters suggestion and thus relevant. Both have to
do (if you understood it) with unintentionally"Closing" the Outlook window.
I apologize if it was out of line.

I didn't say "not work" so don't add quotes to that. What I DID mean by
awkward and unintuitive has to do with consistency and UI standards and
established conventions:
1) Double click on the Speaker icon in the tray. Mixer pops up. Close mixer.
Speaker icon STAYS.
2) Double click Outlook icon in the tray. Outlook Explorer window (yes,
that's what it's called... to us developers at least) pops up. Close Outlook
Explorer window. Outlook icon DISAPPEARS.

Every other program I have in my tray (Yahoo and MSN Messenger, VPN client
program, SQL Server Manager, etc. etc. I could go on) work like #1. Outlook
is the only one that works differently.

In essense, instead of "Minimize to Tray" i'd like a "Allow Outlook to run
in the background (in the tray)" option so when I close the Outlook window,
it's little icon stays in the tray to alert me of new mail and appointment
reminders. This is the way IMHO that Ol2003's "Minimize to Tray" should have
been implemented in the first place.

Phew.

Not on mine it doesn't. If you CLOSE Outlook, (ie click on the "x" in the
top right hand corner), then that is EXACTLY what it does - Outlook CLOSES
and so yes, the tray icon disappears. What else did you expect? If you
MINIMIZE Outlook (ie click on the "-" sign), then the tray icon stays.
Again, what else did you expect?

Yes, that's my point. I'd like a feature where it *doesn't* close. I'm not
saying Outlook's "feature" is broken.... I'm saying that it should work
differently (or at least offer the option).... and work like other apps that
make use of the tray do. Windows Messenger doesn't *CLOSE* when you close
its window. It stays in the tray. The speaker icon doesn't *CLOSE* when I
dismiss the Volume/Mixer window. It stays in the tray. I could go on. The
only program that I have seen in the last 8 years that implements Outlook's
"way" is Kazaa.... and I wouldn't call that program nor what it does
"standard."
What else did you expect?

Given that the option is "Minimize to Tray," nothing. I'm not saying the
feature is broken. I'm saying I'd like to see a different (more standard...
and thus- to me at least- more intuitive) feature.

This is also the behaviour of 99.9% of other applications - if the "x" is
clicked, the application CLOSES.

It was a suggestion, guy. What's YOUR problem? I hope you know what the
difference is between the tray and the taskbar because your posts suggests
to me that you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. And, you know that
Outlook 2003 puts itself both in the taskbar (like a normal app) and in the
tray (like a tray applet).

I'm only saying that it should behave like all the other apps that do the
same.

For me at least, when I *minimize* Outlook I'd like it to actually minimize
to the taskbar... just like every other window in the whole Windows kingdom.
When I *close* its window, I'd like its icon to stay in the tray just like
every other application that puts itself in the tray does.

Consistent UI standards.

That's not true for apps that put an icon in the SYSTEM TRAY... like Outlook
2003 does.

It's Deja Vu all over again!

I've somewhat come around to CMM's point of view, although originally I had
contended that it was the Messenger and other programs that don't close when
the Close button is clicked that are wrong. All apps that make use of the
system tray should tend to work in a similar fashion. That Outlook does not
is something we all can accommodate, but it seems at odds with the behavior
of the preponderance other apps that actually continue running when you
click the Close button. I understand the distinction and why it exists, but
it's just something else one must "get used to".

:) I didn't mean to get into it again! I was just sticking up for the OP
and adding my 2c.

UI Paradigms Consistency is a good thing in my book.
Shall we talk about Excel's awkward MDI / Fake-SDI hybrid interface next?
;-)
Just kidding.
