Outlook slow to browse network shares when attaching

I have several Outlook 2003 users at a remote jobsite. These are new dual
core machines with 2Gb ram. Network is 3Mb/384 DSL using Cisco VPN to
connect back to our servers. If the user browses in Windows Explorer, the
folders/files open quickly. Further, they can browse to the file in Windows
Explorer ,choose Send To Mail Recipient, and the file attaches quickly.
However, when trying to attach a file from the network there is about a two
minute delay between selecting the folder and gaining access to it. This is
only on some of the machines at the site, others can browse and attach files
right away.

It seems to be Outlook specific and user specific. Is there a setting in
Outlook that would cause it to browse slowly when looking at network shares?

Windows XP: Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop
or in the Windows Start menu, left-click on Disconnect Network Drive,
and disconnect any mapped drives that are not currently available.

Windows Vista: Click on Start | Computer | Tools | Disconnect Network
Drive, and disconnected any mapped drives that are not currently available.

Hi Robert,

Yes, if there is any mapped drive which is not available now, it will make the Look In list slow to show up when inserting attachments.
Please perform the suggestion about disconnecting the Network Drive. And then test the issue. What is the result?

If the issue persists, test if the same issue occurs in Word/Excel when you click File > Open > click the Look In list.

Thank you both, that did it. Some of the users had two drives mapped from a
previous jobsite. These were disconnected. Once this was done, they were
able to browse and attach files with expected speed. Perfect!
