outlook spelling

My spellcheck doesn't work on the original message. If someone replies and
the original mesage is attached the misspellings will show up underlined in
red. I have checked the "check before sending" box and set Word as the email
editor. Any suggestions?

are you adding a prefix to the reply? (usually >) if so, that is the cause.

You don't state your Outlook version. If you had said you were using
Outlook 2003, I'd have told you to click Tools>Options>Spelling and examine
the box labeled "Ignore original message text on reply or forward".

I worded that poorly. My concern isn't replie or forwards just the original
outgoing message. I am running 02 (XP)
