Outlook starts only in safe mode

Why does Outlook hang so much?

Outlook 2003 sp2. And I show under Advanced Options no addins
running.

When I close it, many times the exe still appears in the task manager.
Then it won't reopen. Other times, two outlook exe's appear in the
task manager upon launch, causing it to not open. So, I end the
process in task manager, which causes Outlook to only open in safe
mode. Then I shut it down and the whole thing starts again.

This happens periodically and I can't form a trend. It must be some
extra feature screwed up, since it can open in safe mode, but I can't
figure it out. Surely this has happened to others. Anyone know the
fix?

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.

Thanks, but I have none of those activities.

Periodically, I launch outlook and just get the hour glass, which then
disappears without starting the program. In Task Manager, I find two
processes of OUTLOOK.EXE running. I end them and start Outlook again.
I asks to start in safe mode, which I do. It then only shows one
OUTLOOK.EXE process. I then close Outlook and the OUTLOOK.EXE process
closes, then the process starts again in the task manager, but the
program hasn't been launched. The process then stays open in the task
manager. Or, the process doesn't hang, but when I start Outlook two
OUTLOOK.EXE open in the processes, which prevent Outlook from
starting. I have to then end them and do the safe mode thing again.
This never ends.

Unless I do boot cycle, it clears up.

I just have no idea how to track it down to what it could be.
