Outlook Startup

Hi
I am having a problem that comes up sometimes when I open Outlook. A message
appears in the lower right corner telling me that a Data File did not close
correctly last time and it is making a scan. A few minutes later it tells me
the scan is complte and all was ok. The was not happening when I first
started using Outlook but has been happening the last couple of months.
Outlook seems to wok ok and we get all our mail but I would like to know how
to fix this problem. I have just run a diagnostic and it recommended I
download a program periodically that will check my system. Can someone please
give me some advise on this problem in laymans terms if possible? I am
reasonably computer literate but not a whiz.

This is pretty typical behavior I have experienced as well. It appears more
frequently as my PST file(s) approach or exceed 1 GB. It takes outlook
longer to "close" the file and write all the file index pointers, etc as the
file gets larger. You might consider archiving your older files into another
PST and keep your active file smaller. You can attach both files if you need
them all the time otherwise you can open it as you need it.

It can also occur if your PST files are in a "sync" folder. I move my PST
files between home computer and laptop several times a week. If the "sync"
does not complete before I disconnect this can cause the same result.

If you run scanpst.exe on your file every so often it will cut down the
behavior in my experience.

My 2 cents on what I have seen.

Hi Tony,
Please don't think I'm stupid but I am not sure what a PST file is and I did
a search of my computer for scanpst.exe and it did not find one. I have my
archiving set up and I do have quite a few emails with large attachments
saved in my folders. If I delete a lot of these that I don't need would you
say that would help the problem?

scanpst.exe may be a hidden file, you have to search to include hidden
the pst is the suffix to your outlook data file, by default outlook.pst,
also a hidden file.
You dont mention your version of outlook, which may have some baring

Your issue suspects an Outlook shutdown issue.

Make sure you close all applications before shutting down your computer to
make sure no files remain open or applications needing to be killed when
shutting down.

Additionally, verify that the outlook.exe process actually stops when
closing down Outlook. There are several addins which can cause Outlook not
to close completely even when you close the main Outlook window.
