Confused by outlook

When I try to shut down my PC, Windows tells me that an application is
accessing the networks and cannot shut down. This occurs only if I have
previously run Outlook and the message still appears even if I exit all
applications ( including Outlook) before shutting down. I have to force
Oulook to "end now" even though it is not supposed to be running!! I am
running XP and Outlook 2003 with the Outlook connector to access Hotmail.

C

Confused by outlook

Thanks for this - I have tried disabling the enail filtering on my anti virus
software and that has not solved the problem. I don't think I have any of the
other potential causes on my machine. I will have to be bold enough to try
soem of the other suggested solutuions!

If you open Outlook in safe mode: Start > Run (or Start Search in Vista) and
then type:

outlook.exe /safe
(note that there is a space between outlook.exe and /safe)

What happens when you close Outlook and try to shut down your PC?

Hi Kathleen,
I have done as you suggest. When I try to shut down the PC I still get a
message that Outlook needs to be shut down (although I have already exited
it) - I have to force it by clicking on "end now" in order to get the machine
to shut down. Even in safe mode I am still getting a message that " Office
docs or application components are being accessed from the network" which
prevents the machine going on to to stand by or hibernating. Sorry to report
that running in safe mode does not appear to have made any difference.

Right-click on My Computer, scroll to Manage. You'll have to excuse me, I'm
going from memory here as I haven't used Vista in a bit. In the management
console that comes up, the Event Viewer is under System Tools. Check all the
event viewers to look for not only Office or Outook errors but others. Pay
attention to the event ID, source, and the blurb describing the errors.

for information but a few warnings from MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBUS, event 19011

errors from F Secure Gatekeeper, event 1. I will think about a new profile
although I have not done any of the things which are suggested might require

Scrolling back through your previous replies I see you did not actually
remove the e-mail scanning sub-system of the anti-virus. Disabling it
does not necessarily prevent it from interfering. Usual recommendation
it to uninstall the AV and then re-install it minus the e-mail scanning
portion.
