Outlook takes over .eml files

I use a third party email client. I have never used Outlook, but that program
tries to take association of .eml files away from my chosen client. "Set
program access and defaults" says that .eml files are attached to my client;
my client is set as the default email client. Still, Outlook keeps trying to
get control. How can I disable or otherwise put a stop to this behavior?

I seem to remember reading that when Office is updated, with Outlook
installed, outlook is set as default.

DL is correct. You need to reset your mail client to default after Updating Office
that has Outlook installed.

My email client says that it is the default. So does "Set program access and
defaults." Still, I have pushed a couple of radio buttons in the hope of
shaking things up. Is there maybe a reset that I am missing?

If you right click on an eml-file in Explorer and choose Open With... which
applications are listed there?
What type of item is it identified as when looking at the Type column in
Explorer?
What happens when you double click on the eml-file?
Which application do you want to open it with instead?

eml-files are by default not associated with Outlook as Outlook doesn't use
the eml-format but the msg-format. By default, eml-files are associated with
Outlook Express in Windows XP and previous and Windows Mail in Windows
Vista.

Outlook is then indeed sometimes be set as the default mail client but that
doesn't count for the eml file association. Outlook doesn't even use the eml
format but used the msg-format.

My goof--this is Outlook Express I'm dealing with, not Outlook. (Since I've
never used either, I didn't catch the difference.)

A right click on an eml file brings up Open With: Outlook Express; [third
party] Tray Application (listed twice).
The file type in Explorer is Internet Email Message.
When I double click on the email file, it opens in Outlook Express with the
message, "Outlook Express is not your current default email client; would you
like for it to be?" (wording not exact)
I would like for these messages to open in my third party application. I do
not want Outlook Express to be involved in any way.

Then change the file type association to your third-party applicaiton.

program always to open a particular file type, including checking the box for
"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file." Everything
seemed fine, but a couple of hours later the files reverted to Outlook
Express. Please tell me what I may be missing.

Do you use Outlook Express at all? Did you install any Windows updates?

No, I do not use Outlook Express. I suppose I might have installed an update
if it came through the automatic update system.

Then it's possible that the update reset OE as the default mail client and
reregistered the EML file type.

Ahh--I had not noticed the "Choose Program" option under "Open With." This
may be what I needed to do.
