Outlook - Very slow

graham

I have an extremely high spec PC running XP professional
and XP. I find that when I double click on an email it
can take up to 5 seconds to open each one - REALLY
unproductive - is ther some kind of integrated virus
checker at work?
Anyone have any clues?
Thanks
Graham

If you have instant messaging turned on, either turn it off
(tools->Options->other) or ensure it is marked to work in the background.

Swen virus, all e-mails sent to my actual account will be deleted w/out
reading.

My messenger doesn't have an "other" option and if I try
to exit IM it requires me to exir Outlook/and or MSN
Explorer. Any ideas?

Not in Messenger, in Outlook - Tools->Options->Other - uncheck the option
to enable instant messaging in Outlook.

I too have Outlook 2003 (for my sins), but Tools | Options | Other does not
have an instant messaging option.

There are 4 sections: General, AutoArchive, Reading Pane, Person Names:
where in that lot would one see instant messaging?

I don't think you're looking at Outlook's Tools Options dialog. It has 6
panes Preferences, ..., Other

Yes, that's right, that IS where I am looking, but I fear that I must not
have made myself very clear.

Of those 6 Tabs I selected the Other tab, as Milly indicated. This Tab is
divided into the 4 sections I listed, but there is nothing there about
instant messaging.

Sorry I see what you mean. Do you have a checkbox at the bottom under
"Person Names" that says "Display Messenger status in the From field" ?

Don't be double clicking each email individually; open the First email
in your list, then use the toolbar "up" and "down" icons to move to the
next email in the list. ("previous item" or "next item")

I see folks bouncing back and forth from email to list to mail to list
and it's a huge time waster....

Good tip Barbara, but you can save even (slightly) more time by not using
the toolbar, but the Next and Previous keys (Ctrl+< and Ctrl+>,
respectively, which I have always thought were the wrong way round.
Fortunately my fingers know what to do without engaging my brain - if any).

Yes, what to uncheck?

I had the same unbearably slow email and lots of timeout errors - as I read these many messages on slow mail (about the first dozen posts), it occurred to me that maybe my email account was messed up - after trying a few things to no avail, I remembered that PC-cillin had forced some changes so it could intercept the mail. So, I changed back to the original config and it seems to fetch the mail quickly and without errors after several tries.
