Outlook will not open

L

ltcmurray

My wife has a vista home premium laptop with office 2007 enterprise set up on
it. within the last day, Outlook refuses to open - no new programs have been
installed, no changes to the system.

when you open outlook the first message appears saying
"Microsoft Office Outlook has stopped working. Windows is checking for a
solution."

that window closes and is immediately replaced with the window that says
"Microsoft Office Outlook has stopped working. A problem caused the program
to stop working correctly. you will be notified when a solution is available."

the only option is to close the dialoge box. If you try to open it again,
the program asks if you want to open in safe mode - since it failed the last
time. regardless of whether you say yes or no, the program fails to start
and gives the same error message.

finally, if you try to open it once more, it asks if you want to do a detect
and repair. that process completes, but does not fix anything.

I also tried office update, windows update, and microsoft office
diagnostics. nothing

I also tried the three switches that seemed applicable (/resetnavpane, safe,
and cleanreminders) again, all to no avail.

Create a new mail profile.

Control Panel -> Mail (or wherever it is in Vista)

Sounds like a corrupt PST file to me.

solution?
Not enough information for that just yet. :)

Try to create a new Outlook profile, add a new data file to that. Let's
make sure Outlook opens that way.

If it does, try to open your old PST file (file -> open -> outlook data
file). If it opens then, copy the folders into your new PST file.

I used the inbox repair tool and got outlook to open. I have cleaned up a
minor amount of stuff, and moved some to the archive folder, but now I have
another problem.

If I look at the .pst file it says it is 1,957,729 KB in size. When I look
at the personal folders properties in Outlook, it says the grand total of all
folders is 16977 KB.

where is the other 1.8GB??? and how do I get rid of it?
(yes i dumped the trash and refreshed and restarted and all the typical
steps...)

Create a new mail profile.

Control Panel -> Mail (or wherever it is in Vista)

Sounds like a corrupt PST file to me.

Creating a new mail profile will not repair a corrupt PST, not will a new
profile be able to use a corrupt PST, but suggesting a new profile is
appropriate.

There are other things I'd try, though, like deleting the outcmd.dat and
extend.dat files or starting Outlook in safe mode.

Did you compact the PST? This sounds like she's using an old ANSI format PST
from Outlook 2002 or earlier. She should convert it to a Unicode PST that
doesn't have the 2GB size limit. Have her see this:
