Outlook will not start up - can't find exchange server

I'm trying to use Outlook 2003 for the first time. It tries to access the MS
exchange, but can't find it. The pop-up alert says that it needs to be
online to start Outlook. I would think the application would stay open even
if the email functionality doesn't start up. (BTW, I use MSN Explorer for
email and browsing and Internet Explorer for browsing.) I suspect my email
settings are wrong for Outlook. Can you help?
