Outlook & Word change screen to 8 bit color on startup

Problem:

Starting Word or Outlook 2000 the screen changes from 32
bit color to 8 bit color. Upon closing the progam/s the
32 bit setup is back to normal unless one of these
programs is open.

I am baffled.

Not heard of that before! Just a few places to look. What operating
system? Is the PC video integrated with the motherboard and using main
memory? If so, how much total memory(RAM) is available? Is Outlook using
Word as the e-mail editor? Is there some type of macro running in Word?
