Strange--Outlook 2003 is writing files to the root directory with sequential
numbers. There is one file written for every email received. How do I stop
that? There are thousands of these files !!!

That would be the fault of your antivirus scanner. Uninstall your antivirus
program and reinstall it without the email scanning feature. You don't need
it anyway, since the rest of your AV program package will still protect you.
