Outlook XP / 2003 Won't Send Mail with Multiple Accounts

J

Jim Wong

Folks,

I'm having a problem sending mail with Outlook XP and 2003. I'm
trying to use two separate email accounts within my profile: one is an
Exchange account and the other is an IMAP account. When either one of
these accounts is configured singly, everything works fine. However,
when both are configured at the same time, I can download and read
mail, but I cannot send messages. Every message I send with either
account ends up stuck in my Outbox and is never delivered or moved to
Sent Items.

As far as I know, I'm up to date regarding patches and updates. I
tried enabling logging in Outlook, and it generated the trace below.
Any ideas as to what might be going on? Any guidance you can provide
would be very much appreciated.

The log indicates that there were no messages to send. You mention Outlook
XP and 2003. Do you have Outlook 2003? If so, can you get a log from it?

Thanks for the response. See the first log below for an example of
the problem with Outlook 2003 (on a completely different system).
Interestingly, I found that switching to Cached Exchange Mode seemed
to make the problem go away (see the second log below).
Unfortunately, this doesn't help for Outlook XP.

Any ideas?

Are the two accounts on the same server? I assume that you can see the
message you're trying to send in the Outbox, but it just isn't being sent?

Actually, the the IMAP and Exchange accounts are on two different
servers. Yes, sent messages show up in the Outbox, but they are never
actually sent, regardless of which account I send from...

Jeff Stephenson said:
Are the two accounts on the same server? I assume that you can see the
message you're trying to send in the Outbox, but it just isn't being sent?

Thanks for the response. See the first log below for an example of
the problem with Outlook 2003 (on a completely different system).
Interestingly, I found that switching to Cached Exchange Mode seemed
to make the problem go away (see the second log below).
Unfortunately, this doesn't help for Outlook XP.

Any ideas?

I'm really sorry - I've been incredibly busy the last week and haven't had a
chance to think about this (what's going on isn't obvious). Are you still
encountering the problem? If so, let's continue to try and figure out
what's going on. If not, do you know what fixed it?

No problem, thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I'm still having this
problem in both Outlook 2003 and Outlook XP. It turns out that I can
actually send mail if I enable Cached Exchange Mode, but that
obviously doesn't help with XP...

Jim, we're trying to figure out how this could happen, or even how we can
get diagnostics to help us understand what's going on. Do the messages stay
in the Outbox even when you do a Send/Receive or a Send All?

Thanks for the response. See the first log below for an example of
the problem with Outlook 2003 (on a completely different system).
Interestingly, I found that switching to Cached Exchange Mode seemed
to make the problem go away (see the second log below).
Unfortunately, this doesn't help for Outlook XP.

Any ideas?

Thanks for following up. Yes, they seem to stay in the Outbox not
matter what I do. I've tried both Send/Receive and Send All, to no
avail.

one of
these accounts is configured singly, everything works fine. However,
when both are configured at the same time, I can download and read
mail, but I cannot send messages. Every message I send with either
account ends up stuck in my Outbox and is never delivered or
moved
to
Sent Items.

As far as I know, I'm up to date regarding patches and updates. I
tried enabling logging in Outlook, and it generated the trace below.
Any ideas as to what might be going on? Any guidance you can provide
would be very much appreciated.
