Outlook XP Contacts Glitch, Please Help!

M

Michael Shealy

Hello all you MVPs. Thanks for all the work you do here.

A while back, with a previouly working perfectly Outlook XP, I clicked
my Outlook desktop icon and nothing happened. Again, and nothing. I
pulled up the 'All Programs' menu and clicked MS Outlook there, still
nothing. Shut down and restarted, same result. So, in my infinite
wisdom, I reinstalled (hah, I didn't think to System Restore, duh!).
First, tho, I made a copy of the .PST file and salted it away on
another drive, just in case.

Reinstalling wasn't a problem, all apparently went well. All my
emails were intact and the 'new' Contacts folder contained all my
contacts and sub-folders with contacts. When the Contacts folder is
selected, contacts show in the preview pane, same way any of the
Contacts sub-folders.

Outlook now worked OK, except for a couple of little glitches. 1)
When composing a new email from the Inbox, clicking 'New', an
'Untitled Message' window comes up, then clicking the 'To' button, the
'Select Names' window comes up with 'Contacts' shown in the 'Show
Names from the:' box, but no contacts and no sub-folders.

Funny tho, 2) when I go ahead and start typing a name I know is in the
contacts folder, after entering only a couple of letters, it
auto-fills the rest of the name and addy.

I've been reading here for a while and have tried lots of things y'all
have suggested to others and nothing has worked, so far.

How can I get the Contacts to come up with the 'Select Names' window?

Any help would be appreciated. TIA

Under Tools->Email Accounts->Directories->View or Change, how many contact
lists show up there? Try deleting them both and then re-add the Outlook
Address Book service to restore your good address book.

Thanks, Millie. This *almost* worked. Now the 'Select Names' window
shows my Contacts folder in the 'Show Names from the:' box and the
contacts in this folder are available to pick as entries in the 'To'
box....BUT...no sub-folders are shown (& I have a bunch). They still
show on the left in my 'Folder List', but they won't respond from the
pull-down arrow. Just a *little* more help, please! Thanks again,
M.S. from M.S.

If yo have sub-folders, you will need to right click on each of them and
enable them as Outlook Address books. Right click->Properties->Outlook
Address Book->check the box to enable them.
