Outlook XP preview pane activates itself after it is turned off

C

Charlie Hill

Outlook XP preview pane reactivates itself after it is turned off. By default
the user turns off the preview pane. Every once in a while, when he clicks
on the sent items folder, the preview pane will be active. He will click the
preview pane icon on the tool bar to turn it off. Some time later, he will
return to the sent items folder, and the preview pane will be turned on.

Please do not suggest the /nopreview command line option, or the registry
hack. I am now aware of those options, and plan to configure his laptop to
disable the preview pane. He wants to know why this is happening, so I am
looking for the possible causes, not the fix.

Thanks all...

Hi,

I am really sorry for any inconveniences that brought by this problem.
Based on my experience, there are several factors may caused this problem.
Here are some general troubleshooting steps you can try.

1. Outlook safe mode
=========================
An Outlook add-in and script can force the preview pane be enabled. So we
can check this issue in Outlook safe mode first.
Run "Outlook.exe /Safe" to start Outlook in safe mode.

If in Outlook Safe Mode, the problem doesn't occur again. Please restart
Outlook to normal mode and then disable all add-ins.

-- Start up Outlook in normal mode
-- Click Tools, then Options
-- In the Other Tab, click Advanced Options
-- Click Add-in Manager, CLEAR all the check boxes in Add-in Manager
-- Click COM-addin, CLEAR all check boxes
-- Restart Outlook

2. Corrupted Outlook view data
========================
Run "Outlook /cleanviews" to start Outlook, and then check the issue again.

3. Outlook configuration file
========================
1) Perform a search on the computer to find the following files:
extend.dat, outcmd.dat, frmcache.dat, views.dat

Some of them may not exist, but it should not matter. We may also need to
show the extension of the file and enable the "show hidden files" option in
"Folder Options".

2) Delete or rename the files

3) Detect and repair office.

-- Open one of the Office programs, and select "Detect and Repair" on the
Help menu;
-- In the "Detect and Repair" dialog box, click Start;
-- Insert the Office installation CD if prompted. Restart your computer
after the repair process is complete.
If this problem persists, please go to next step.

4. Corrupted Outlook profile setting
=======================
Since this setting is separated with different Outlook profiles, so this
problem may be caused by the corrupted Outlook profile. To create a new
Outlook profile:

Hope the info helps.
