Outlook XP / VPN / Exchange Server 2003

I am trouble shooting a problem that started happening after I added XP
service pack 2 to one of my computers. I am connecting to the office using
VPN to retrieve email. The client is Outlook XP. The Exchange Server is
2003. From time to time I get an error message that reports the client
cannot contact the exchange server, except that the name of the server it is
reporting is incorrect. It shows the name of the company back up domain
controller. If I have started an email message to send and that error pops
up I will be unable to send the message. I get an "unspecified error" box.
If I clear the error message regarding the exchange server and start another
message it will send correctly (providing that weird error message does not
pop up).

I do have a control machine in the house. Another computer, virtually
identical, is running the same client, but I did not yet install service pack
2 and it doesn't get the error.

A third computer that does have the service pack, but is running Outlook
2003 and does not get the error.

Anyone have any ideas?

Add Outlook to the firewall's exception list.
