how do i keep outlook running in the background so it can tell me i have mail
and is there a voice i can use to tell me i have new mail.

Keep it minimized on your computer. Google for mail notification / sounds.

Sure, don't close it, Minimize it, and then go to Control Panel, Sounds
and Audio devices and replace the "New Mail Notification" wav file with
one of your choosing. (Record your own if you want to)

by minimizing it it still takes up a space on my taskbar like internet
explorer. Is there a way to have it running in my notifications area.

Outlook 2007 does that.

windows mail is better i think then as you do not have to minimize it thanks

No idea about "Windows mail", never used it. But, have fun with the sounds.

FWIW, in 2003 you can right-click on it in the Systray and select "Hide when
minimized."

In that case, the answer depends entirely on what operating system you
are using. Since the predominate operating system currently being used
is Windows XP, (but Vista is closing in) and what I have, I gave the
location for XP. For further assistance with System sounds please post
to the group for the operating system you are using. But the "event" you
are looking for is the "New Mail Notification". and the wav file that
point to.

Outlook 2003 and 2007 can to that by right-clicking the icon in the
Notification Area and choosing "Hide When Minimized". Outlook 2002 can do
that with a registry change. See this:
