Outlook03 - Accessing Address Book

C

Charliec

I posted this in the Outlook Calendaring newsgroup by mistake and then
found this group - so am reposting here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a bit of a problem. In Outlook 03, when I go to Options and Click
Address Book, I receive the following error:

Address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with
this address list could not be opened. It may have been moved or deleted
or you don't have permissions.........

What would cause this problem and how does one fix it? My contacts folder
is intact and I seem to have all contacts available under Contacts View.
Thanks and any thoughts appreciated.
Charlie

It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track" of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or OS. Use the following steps to reset the connection.
Note that in some instances you may actually have to remove the Outlook
Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it
before you can get it to work.

Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

Ok, Russ,
Was able to fix it with your instructions. Thanks

One more question. When in the Contact View, and I look at "My Contacts",
I see 3 items named "Contacts", the first one contains my contacts, the
other 2 are blank. Also, I see 3 items named "Contacts in Personal
Folder", the first one contains my contacts, the other 2 are blank. Is
this proper that you have have this duplication? If not, how does one fix
it.
Thanks

Only once occurence shows up there, but when in Contacts View, the Pane
containing "My Contacts" have multiple occurences. So, am not sure where
to remove the extra entry - should I try deleting them from My Contacts?
Danger there?

Russ,
I've got what seems like a similar problem as below. I
followed the instructions you gave and I still only get a
few addresses to show up in the OAB from the contacts
link.
Oddly, I noticed the scroll bar is small enough to
indicate a MUCH longer list than the OAB displays. The
data is there, the connection between the Contacts and
the OAB seems to be the culprit. How does this get
corrupted and how can I fix it/ prevent it in the furture.

Thanx, Steve

Are you certain that all of your Contacts have valid, resolved electronic

What steps have you tried and how were these Contacts created?
Might you have more than one Contacts Folder in this profile?

Attached is a screen shot that shows the My Contact,, Current View and
Contacts Panes. The top one in the My Contacts Pane & the 1st Contacts
Personal Folder contains my contacts. The bottom four items are empty as
you can see from my selection of the 2nd item from the bottom in that Pane.

BTW, I also have multiple entries in My Calendar Pand under the Calendar
View!
Thanks

Yes, I saw that already.
My questions to you are:
These Folders would only appear if you expressly created them.

Did you?

What does Folder List show?

Ok, looking at folder list - I figured out the problem. On my previous
computer that I replaced with this one a few weeks ago, I had PocketMirror
installed for my Palm Handheld. On the new machine, I did not install the
Palm, but bringing over the .pst file from the old system, brought over the
add-in PocketMirror also. I deleted the folder and now have just the
normal entries. Thanks for the tip.

STEVE

Are you certain that all of your Contacts have valid,
resolved electronic
addresses that would be expected to show up in the
Outlook Address Book?

By valid, I think you mean do they work? Yes. They've
been working for quite a while. I recieved a couple of
errors on Outlook startup (sorry, can't remember what
they were, just started outlook again and it opened the
second time.) I don't understand what 'resolved
electronic addresses' means. Need help with that one.
What steps have you tried and how were these Contacts
created?

They were always showing in the OAB. Then just gone
after I added my Palm data into outlook. Also added some
scanned business cards through "CardScan" 6.0.5 from
Corex. But 90% of them have been in Outlook for more than
a month(originally imported from OE6 when Office XP was
installed)

I ran the scanpst tool and it came back clean. Also
removed the OAB from the profile. Actually followed all
your instructions to 'Charlie' about re-establishing the
OAB in the profile.
Might you have more than one Contacts Folder in this
profile?

I'm not sure I follow you on the having more than one
Contacts folder. I do have a couple of sub folders
under 'contacts', but not 2 or more 'contacts' folders.
Hope this helps. I hope I understood your questions and
gave you the info you requested.

Thanks Russ
