Outlook2003 CRASH: fault in outlook.exe, stamp 42cacc7d; fault in msmapi32.dll, stamp 42cdb657

Rachid Finge

I must admit I'm quite new to usenet, especially to Microsoft's groups on
it. As far as I can see, it seems like a lot of friendly yet highly
skilled people come around often here, so I sincerely hope someone can
help me with this problem.

Actually, the problem I'm having with Outlook 2003 has been discussed here
earlier:
http://groups.google.nl/group/micro...e6caf2?q=msmapi32.dll&rnum=5#0d2e521349e6caf2

However, this thread never came to an satisfactory end, ie. no solution
was found.

So, here's the situation.

A few weeks ago, when I tried to launch Outlook 2003, it crashed as soon
as it wanted to check for e-mails. Since in my case Outlook 2003 does this
immediately after launch, the program crashes just right after I started
it.

The crash looks like this:

I've tried a lot of things to fix this problem, including Detect and
Repair, reinstall of Office 2003, upgrading to Service Pack 2, creating a
new mail profile, removing all mail accounts from Outlook and recreating
them, creating a new PST file, removing outcmd.dat, running scanpst.exe,
running in Safe mode (crashes too),and, finally, reinstalling Windows.
That's right, I reinstalled Windows, and unfortunately, it didn't solve
the problem.

I've noticed that this problem occurs the second time I try to
send/receive. So, basically:

1. Having a clean profile and pst file: create a new account.
2. Do Send/Receive, all goes well.
3. After first sync completed, do Send/Receive again.
4. *crash*

From that point on, Outlook will always crash as soon as the user tries to
do Send/Receive. I've enabled the Logging feature in Outlook to try and
get more insight in the problem. After the first Send/Receive, ie. the one
which goes without a crash, these are the last lines in the log file:

2006.01.06 21:52:33 POP3 (mail.xxxxxx.nl): End execution
2006.01.06 21:52:33 xxxxxx.nl: ReportStatus: RSF_COMPLETED, hr = 0x800ccc90
2006.01.06 21:52:33 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation completed

At the second attempt, where the crash occurs, there actually barely is
logging:

2006.01.06 23:36:04 <<<< Logging Started (level is LTF_TRACE) >>>>
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation started (flags = 00000001)
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: UploadItems: 0 messages to send
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation completed
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation started (flags = 00000030)
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: DoPOPDownload(flags = 00000030, max msg =
ffffffff): full items

That's all. I've contacted my hosting provider. They confirmed that during
these scenarios, Outlook crashes *before* actually having contact with the
POP3 mail server, ie. my IP number doesn't appear in any of their log
files at the times Outlook crashed.

As mentioned earlier, Safe mode fails too. The only way to actually get
into Outlook is to launch it and the quickly set Work Offline. It will
prevent Outlook from trying to do a Sync. During that time, I can access
every part in Outlook and am able to view all messages, etc.

Perhaps it's worth to mention that the POP3 server I'm using stores nearly
15,000 e-mail messages. While creating an account, I always set the flags
"Leave messages on server" and "Remove from server when removed from
Deleted Items". This enables me to use my webmail client elsewhere, even
if Outlook is running at home.

Finally, some relevant system specs: AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 1024 MB RAM,
WinXP SP2 US, Office2003 SP2 UK.

Well, I hope someone can help me out with this. I usually can fix all the
things myself, but this one's really bigger than me! If there's any extra
information wanted, I'll be happy to give it.

Rachid, I have just installed Office 2003 and I seem to have the same problem
in Outlook as you. When I launch it, it immediately tries to sync the files
with my ISP email server and then just hangs. Currently on 2 of 6 incoming
emails. Earlier it had worked for just one new incoming item. I have
iHateSpam filter on as well so I might try and uninstall that. Also, check
your Firewall and Security software for any blockages etc. I ran Outlook 2000
for the last 5 years without any problems whatsoever. This is extremely
annoying. I can't offer any solutions but I'll keep trying and let you know
if I find anything.
