Outlook2007/Word 2003 Spell check

S

Simon

I have office 2003, want to upgrade to Outlook 2007 without upgrading entire
suite. I'm aware that "automatic" spell check will not work with that
configuration. However, will

1) Manual spell check (i.e F7) work.
2) Will "automatically check spelling before sending" work.

BTW, use HTML for e-mail, but do not use Word as my e-mail editor now and
realize I will not be able to use it in an Outlook 2007/Word 2003 setup.

Thanks.

I understand that. What I'm trying to find out is whether Word 2007 is
required for two SPECIFIC options/processes, that being

a) Checking spelling in an outgoing e-mail that uses the internal outlook
editor by using F7, and
b) Checking spelling by selecting the ""check for spelling before sending"
option.

Why not try it and see?

Didn't you already post this a day or two ago?

1) I'd prefer not to spend $100 for the program and then have to remove it
from my machine 15 minutes later because spell check is not functional (I'm a
lousy speller, so if spell check does not work at all I'm better off staying
with Outlook 2003).

2) I did post this a couple of days ago. However, I got no response and when
I looked back at the forum, I could not even find my own message. So I
decided to repost using a better subject heading in the hope of getting a
response. And it worked...kind of.

I've gotten two responses. Neither of which answered my question. Was kind
of surprised, since as a long time computer user I'm more used to getting
responses in help forums that were...uh... actually helpful. Seemed like a
pretty simple question, but I guess maybe not.

What's wrong with using the trial version you can download from Microsoft?

My understanding is that the trial version is for the entire Office 2007
professional suite. I don't know if I can download the entire suite and then
just install Outlook. Obviously, if I install the entire suite then it will
not answer the question of how Outlook 2007 handles spell check without Word
2007, since if I install the entire suite Word 2007 will in fact be installed.

I'm also concerned in that installation of the Microsoft Suite causes
substantial changes to the registry, and I'm not certain how "clean" the
uninstall and reversion back to Outlook 2003 will be. Frankly, the reason I'm
looking to make the change is because there are one or two things Outlook
2003 is not doing in the manner is should, which I suspect is in part because
of registry changes make by other programs that have com add ins that did not
uninstall correctly. For example, Windows Desktop Search will not index my
Outlook .pst file. That problem is, according to threads I've seen, not
unique to me, and I've found no good universal answer as to why that happens
(other than things that don't apply to me), other than some references that
the problem goes away when you load Outlook 2007.

And that is not the only quirk with things not working exactly the way they
should.

I realize, BTW, that it is possible that if I install Outlook 2007, allow it
to in effect clean up any orphaned registry problems, then uninstall Outlook
2007 and do a clean reinstall of Outlook 2003, the quirks might go away. But
bottom line is that I can spend a couple of hours trying to clean up these
quirks in addition to the hours I've already spent. or I can hopefully drop
$100 bucks and clean up the problems with that new install. I'll trade the
cash if it saves me a bunch of time. But I don't want to spend a bunch of
time just to save the cash.

So the question still remains as to whether "check spelling on send" works
with Outlook 2007 w/o Word 2007.

Of course you can. When you go to install, just make everything but Outlook
"not available":

On the whole, the reports seen in these Outlook groups indicate that, in
general, the process works well enough.

Thank you. I did properly install only the Outlook 2007 portion of the Suite.

I'm running my tests now. Thanks for the suggestion.
